*சர்வதேச புகழ் பெற்ற, உலகின் முன்னணி ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் அமைப்பான அமெரிக்க ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் சங்கத்தின் (ASC) உறுப்பினராக பிரபல ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் ரவிவர்மன் இணைத்துக் கொள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளார்.*

அமெரிக்கர் அல்லாத, வெளிநாட்டில் வசிக்கும் ஒளிப்பதிவாளர்கள் இந்த அங்கீகாரத்தைப் பெறுவது என்பது மிக மிகக் கடினமான ஒன்றாகும். பல ஆஸ்கர் விருதுகளை வென்ற ஒளிப்பதிவாளர்கள் ஒரு ஒளிப்பதிவாளரின் படங்களை பார்த்து அந்த ஒளிப்பதிவின் தரத்தை சோதித்து அதைப்பற்றி ஆலோசித்து அதற்குப் பிறகு தான் கூட்டாக இந்த அங்கீகாரத்தை வழங்குவர் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

தேசிய விருது உள்ளிட்ட பல்வேறு உயரிய பெருமைகளை ஏற்கனவே பெற்றுள்ள ரவிவர்மன், பெரிதும் மதிக்கப்படும் ஏ எஸ் சி உறுப்பினராக ஏற்கப்பட்டதைத் தொடர்ந்து திரையுலகினர் மற்றும் பல்வேறு தரப்பினர் அவருக்கு வாழ்த்து தெரிவித்து வருகின்றனர்.

இது குறித்து மகிழ்ச்சி தெரிவித்த ரவிவர்மன், “ஏ எஸ் சி என்று அழைக்கப்படும் அமெரிக்க ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் சங்கத்தின் உறுப்பினராக என்னை இணைத்துக் கொண்டதற்காக அதன் தலைமை மற்றும் குழுவினருக்கு மனமார்ந்த நன்றியை தெரிவித்துக் கொள்கிறேன். உலகம் எங்கும் இருக்கின்ற ஒளிப்பதிவாளர்கள் இந்த சங்கத்தில் இணைவதைக் கனவாக கொண்டிருப்பார்கள். ஆஸ்கர் உள்ளிட்ட விருதுகளை வென்ற உலகின் முன்னணி ஒளிப்பதிவாளர்கள் உறுப்பினர்களாக இயங்கும் தளத்தில் நானும் இடம் பெற்றிருப்பது மிகுந்த மகிழ்ச்சியையும் பெருமையையும் அளிக்கிறது,” என்றார்.

கடந்த 25 ஆண்டுகளில், தமிழ், மலையாளம், தெலுங்கு, கன்னடம், ஹிந்தி மற்றும் ஆங்கில படங்களில் சிறந்த ஒளிப்பதிவை ரவிவர்மன் வழங்கி இருக்கிறார். இந்தியாவின் தலைசிறந்த இயக்குநர்கள் அனைவரோடும் அவர் பணி புரிந்திருக்கிறார். ‘பொன்னியின் செல்வன்’, ‘தசாவதாரம்’, ‘வேட்டையாடு விளையாடு’, ‘பர்பி’, ‘சஞ்சு’, போன்ற பல படங்களுக்கு ரவிவர்மன் ஒளிப்பதிவு செய்திருக்கிறார் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

அமெரிக்க ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் சங்கத்தின் உறுப்பினர் ஆகும் இரண்டாவது இந்தியர் என்ற பெருமையை பெற்றார் ரவிவர்மன். இதற்கு முன்னர் ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் சந்தோஷ் சிவன் மட்டுமே இந்தச் சங்கத்தின் உறுப்பினராக ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப்பட்டார்.

It is a tough task for non-American cinematographers to receive this recognition. It is noteworthy that cinematographers who have won multiple Oscar awards watch a cinematographer’s body of work, assess the quality of the cinematography, discuss and only then collectively grant this recognition.

Ravi Varman, who has been honoured with many accolades including a National Award, has been greeted by the film fraternity and prominent personalities following his acceptance as a highly respected ASC member.

Accepting this recognition , Ravi Varman said, “I would like to convey my heartfelt gratitude to the board of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) for inducting me as a member. Cinematographers from all over the world dream of joining this association. It gives me great joy and pride to be included in a platform where the world’s leading cinematographers who have won awards including Oscars are members. I wholeheartedly thank those who made me realise this dream.”

In the last 25 years, Ravi Varman has shot many films in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and English. He has collaborated with many great directors of India.

Some of the noteworthy films that Ravi Varman has done cinematography are Ponniyin Selvan’, ‘Dasavatharam’, ‘Vettaiyaadu Vaidyaadu’, ‘Barbi’, ‘Sanju’, etc.

Ravi Varman became the second Indian to be inducted into the American Society of Cinematographers, after cinematographer Santosh Sivan.
